Student Essay Competition


The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Australia Student Essay Competition is designed to inspire Australian university students to take an active interest in the application of advanced technologies to improve transport systems, while providing a chance to attend the 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems in Melbourne, 10-14 October, 2016.

Introduction

ITS Australia is giving students the opportunity to promote their work and their University by attending the 2016 World Congress in Melbourne this year. It will be an opportunity to attend sessions, meet speakers and exhibitors and attend discussions, demonstrations and technical tours. This money-can’t-by experience will be educational and an opportunity to build networks and contacts with ITS specialists in Australia and around the world.

Only open to students enrolled at accredited Australian Universities.

Essay Topics (select 1)

Topic 1: Describe how autonomous and connected vehicle technology can result in significant improvements to our transport systems?
Topic 2: Describe how existing and future ITS deployments can help realisation of Smart Cities that are sustainable and liveable?

Submission Deadline – Friday 29 July 2016

How to Submit

All submissions must be made online by the deadline date: Friday 29 July 2016.
For essays – All essays must be submitted as a single PDF file.
For videos – Students must submit a link to view their video online, with the actual hard copy video file to be kept on stand-by if requested by ITS Australia.

Prizes

Six students, each representing Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania, will be selected as the official winners and will receive the following:

  • Complimentary student registration to attend the 23rd ITS World Congress 2016 in Melbourne
  • $500 Allowance towards airfare and accommodation
  • Membership of the ITS Australia Future Innovators Club, connecting with other ITS students from across Asia Pacific

Eligibility Requirements

  • Author must be a postgraduate or undergraduate student enrolled in a university in Australia.
  • Entries are limited to 1 paper per student and should be original, unpublished work of an individual student.
  • Participants agree to be available to media and promotion activity in association with this Award and the 23rd ITS World Congress in Melbourne.
  • Participants agree that any video material submitted is able to be used by ITS Australia to promote the ITS World Congress or ITS in Australia.

Essay Format

  • The author’s name and essay title should appear at the top of all pages.
  • Only submissions using the official Student Essay Competition Cover Page will be accepted
  • Essays should be typed, single spaced, and appear on A4 white paper.
  • Preferred font: Calibri, size 11.
  • Essays are not to exceed 2,000 words in length, must be written in English by only one person, and should not have appeared in any publications other than in university publications.

Video Option

  • Entrants are also encouraged to submit a video no longer than 1 minute to support the essay and the key messages contained within the essay.

Evaluation Criteria

Essays will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Interest of the topic and content to the broad Intelligent Transportation Systems industry
  • Analysis and reasoning
  • Timeliness, originality, and innovation
  • Quality and use of research
  • Writing quality and clarity
  • Depth of knowledge, and awareness of ITS issues and challenges
