With 10,000 people from around the world in Melbourne this week for the 23rd World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), the announcement from the South Australian Government of a $10 million investment into connected, autonomous car technology is warmly welcomed by the industry.
Announced on Monday by Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan, the South Australian Government's significant commitment to the acceleration of development and implementation of connected and autonomous vehicle technology, is something ITS Australia CEO, Susan Harris says will set the tone for others to follow.
"With thousands of international delegates in Melbourne this week to celebrate the 23rd World Congress on ITS, it's fantastic for us to be able to demonstrate the commitment our state Governments have to investing in collaborative projects with our industry."
"It is critical that Australian governments contribute funding and show this type of leadership - as leading by example will attract global technology players to Australia, joining Australian leaders, to develop this technology," says Susan Harris, CEO of ITS Australia.
A commitment of this scale is something Harris says is "critical in actively engaging Australian industry in emerging technology, which in turn will inform policy development and strategic deployment of new technology".
Transport and Infrastructure Minister Stephen Mullighan says his Government's $10 million investment over three years is focused on enhancing safety, liveability and the livelihood of the South Australian economy.
"As the demand on our roads continues to grow, it’s vital that we look for more efficient ways to move traffic around the State. We are looking for creative proposals that will accelerate the roll-out of these technologies on our roads and open up new opportunities for South Australian businesses and our economy.
We already have world leading companies in this field such as Cohda Wireless, SAGE Automation and Sydac - all companies based in South Australia and some of our most impressive success stories," says Minister Mullighan
Susan Harris of ITS Australia says that by doing these projects in Australia the Australian public is exposed to new emerging ITS technology which in turn builds understanding and trust.
Grant applications will open on 14 November for the fund which is worth $10 million over three years.
